usethings design and make useful things including furniture, fittings, and home-ware. Based in Castlemaine since 2004, we are about simple yet well-made things that embody good design, craftsmanship, local production, renewable or recycled materials, and durability. See our online store and blog for more.

We are still having problems with the automatic order confirmation in our online store. Please check your account or contact us if you have any questions. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Our vision is to support a better way of living in the design of furniture & homewares – useful things. A literal translation of the Scandinavian word brugsting, usethings embodies a tradition of simple, functional design. We devise beautiful solutions to everyday needs.

With low impact materials, production methods, finishes, and waste minimisation, usethings design solutions encourage a harmonious relationship between family, working life, environment, and community.

Tim Preston and Debbie Taylor are the usethings design team. A Bachelor of Industrial Design and a trade-qualified Shipwright, Tim combines rare knowledge of traditional methods and materials with a modern, cutting edge sensibility. Debbie is a design and building consultant who loves to be a medium for the exchange of ideas in a project. Debbie has a background in Art Direction and photographic styling.
