Film clip showing how to tie nine essential knots

Knots are one of our favourite useful-things. Shown here are:

  • Sheet bend to join two ropes, double sheet bend to join a small and big rope

  • strait bend to join two ropes (a relatively recent and excellent knot)

  • bowline to form a loop on the end of a rope

  • butterfly loop to form a loop in the middle of a rope

  • round turn and two half hitches to tie-off onto something solid

  • clove hitch to tie off

  • rolling hitch for pull in the axis of the tie-off also makes sliding knot for an adjustable loop

  • figure 8 a stopper knot if you can put a rope through a hole and want to stop it pulling out.

All filmed looking down at the hands so you can see the process from your perspective.

The double sheet bend and figure 8 are used in the drying racks. We could use an injection moulded clip to attach and connect the cord to the drying rack... but here is a useful and long-life alternative - all it requires is the knowledge to tie, not a plastic thingy with its manufacturing impacts and eventual failure. And worse, the loss of the ancient knowledge and skill of knots.

If the clip doesn't load below go to usethings knots on YouTube.
